Operating sustainably
Since 2023, Vienna Airport has been one of the first airports in Europe to operate on a carbon-neutral basis. At the heart of this is Austria’s largest photovoltaic system on the airfield, supplemented by additional systems on the rooftops, with a total output of 30 million kilowatt-hours. Furthermore, Vienna Airport is supplied with CO2-neutral district heating. Intelligent building management and solutions for greater energy efficiency – such as the conversion of all lighting systems on site to energy-saving LED systems – enable a sustainable approach. In addition, a fleet of around 400 electric vehicles is in use at the airport. Smart City control software developed in collaboration with TU Wien optimises energy consumption on site. The first steps towards the more than 1,000 individual measures implemented to date were taken ten years ago. Innovation and participation are the drivers behind the sustainable development of AirportCity.
We all benefit from this.
